Why do students wear uniforms at Saint Gertrude High School?

One of the hallmarks of Catholic education is the school uniform. By wearing a uniform, your daughter is equal to everyone else in the school. She will not be able to distinguish the “have's” from the “have not's.” In other words, your daughter can concentrate on more important aspects such as her academic success.

It is more important for our young women to concentrate on getting to know others by their character not by their dress.

Our students will tell you that by wearing a uniform, your daughter will know exactly what she has to wear each day. No decisions, no worry, and most importantly, no fuss.

Uniforms save on everyone's budget. For these reasons and more, many public schools are choosing uniforms. Just ask the schools here in Richmond and in California!

How much should I buy?

We recommend:

2 Kilts (New Plaid)
1 Blazer (Brass Buttons)
3 Long Sleeve Shirts
2 Short Sleeve Shirts
1 V-Neck Cardigan Sweater (New)
and /or
1 Crew Neck Sweater

You are welcome to buy more or even less than what is stated. It depends on your budget and the cycle of your washing machine.

Do I order everything from Rose Uniforms?

Shirts may be purchased at J.C. Penney's or even LL Bean or Lands End catalog. Boys shirts may be used. Just make sure they are fitted, i.e. shoulder seams fit on shoulders.

Shoes may be purchased at any store. Please make sure the shoes are solid brown and that they tie. No buckles or moccasins.

P.E. Uniforms

The P.E. uniform consists of a white T-Shirt, green shorts and athletic shoes. The T-Shirt and shorts cost approximately $14 each and must be purchased at the school boutique usually during Registration/Book Sale day. Only 9th & 10th grade PE students need uniforms.

Does my daughter ever get to wear “regular” clothes?

Yes. We have tag days here at SGHS. Usually about once a month, sometimes more. If an occasion arises for a special theme, students may pay $1 to wear regular clothes that fit the theme of the day. This money always goes to a charity or towards a school project. If students do not participate, they must wear all of the correct uniform.

What is allowed for Tag Day?

Presentable clothes are allowed. This does not include sweat pants or jeans with holes. Any clothing that distracts other students may not be worn. Sr. Charlotte will give permission on occasion for students to wear shorts. These shorts must be fingertip length.

If students have PE on a tag day, they are expected to dress out and wear their PE uniform.

We strongly advise you to please, please put your daughter's name in her blazer!!!

Uniform Fitting Day

Uniform Fitting Day is usually the first or second Saturday in May. Representatives from the Rose Uniform Company are on hand to fit the girls. Uniforms may be purchased and picked up that day. The Boutique will also take orders for P.E. uniforms as well as sell Boutique items that day.
