Foreign Language Club
Students from all language classes are encouraged to join this club. Special
events take place throughout the year. Students also participate in Foreign
Language Week held in April. A very special banquet is held and students
learn about international food and customs. Presentations from the various
language classes are made. The Foreign Language Club also provides service
to the community.
Green Shield (Newspaper)
Under the direction of the editor and assistant
editors,
students
publish regular editions of the school newspaper. In the process,
they refine their interviewing, research, photography and writing
skills. Add to that the thrill of seeing one’s name in print,
and the student has a rich, productive extracurricular activity
that looks great on a resume.
National Honor Society
The National Honor Society is an honorary society
to which students are selected who have excelled in scholarship,
leadership, character, and service. Juniors or seniors may be eligible
if they have a 3.5 cumulative grade point average, two leadership
activities and more than forty hours of service, with ongoing service.
The National Honor Society sponsors a food and clothing drive,
Song Contest and May Day.
Pro Niño and Human Relations
Pro Niño and Human Relations club's focus is on multicultural
issues. We hope to learn to appreciate the differences in cultures
and recognize the similarities all cultures bring to the world.
At club meetings, the members share concerns regarding the treatment
of individuals both in our community and in the world at large.
Students participate in service projects in an effort to help the less fortunate.
Pro Niño's primary concern is to help the orphaned children in El Progreso,
Honduras. The students at SGHS hope to raise awareness of the situation. They
have contributed time and money to support and better the children's lives
in Honduras.. Pro Niño,
(for the child) performs service projects to help children in our local community
as
well.
Red Cross Club
This club is a service based group that helps
the Red Cross fulfill its humanitarian mission. Club members participate
in monthly
Red Cross service projects that impact the community and
the world
Robotics
FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology)
Robotics is a co-ed club hosted by Benedictine High school.
FIRST provides a unique opportunity for students to build self
confidence, knowledge, and life skills while motivating young
people to pursue opportunities in science, technology, and
engineering. Students build a robot and participate in regional
and state competitions.
SADD
Students Against Destructive Decisions is a club
designed to help promote activities that will guard against destructive
decisions
such as drinking, drinking and driving, and drug use. This
club sponsors the Prom Promise for the school.
SCA and Honor Council
The purpose of the Student Council is to provide
opportunities for student leadership and to establish a spirit
of cooperation between the student body and the faculty. The SCA
members are elected school wide and by class. Faculty approval
is required. The SCA president is a member of the PTSO Board.
The Honor Court handles violations of the Honor Code.
Its members include the SCA President, SCA Vice President, SCA
Secretary, Senior Class President, NHS President, and 3 Senior
SCA representatives. A faculty moderator oversees the Honor Court
and attends all hearings.
SPAAP (Spreading Positive Attitudes Among Peers)
The focus of this peer facilitator group is to
promote positive self-image and values for Saint Gertrude students.
SPAAPers visit 9th and 10th grade Theology classes and talk about
peer issues. Members of this club also serve as peer mediators
in student disagreements. Current Junior and Senior SPAAP members
and faculty select from an application process. SPAAPers are given
special training during the summer. SPAAP sponsors hockey homecoming
and "Spread your Love Week".
STET (Literary Magazine)
Stet means "let it stand" in Latin and
is a printer’s term indicating that a piece of writing should
be printed as is, without alterations. STET, the Saint Gertrude
literary and art magazine, provides a forum for students’ and
teachers’ artwork and writing. The student staff assembles
a visually attractive publication for late-spring distribution.
Stuart Avenue Players
This is a coed club for students from Saint Gertrude
and Benedictine who are involved in plays and musicals. Activities
include working on-stage or as part of backstage crews for shows,
attending plays, theater tours, guest speakers on theater topics,
and suggesting future musicals and plays.
Student Outreach to Society (SOS)
This is a school-wide organization which coordinates
volunteer service projects in the local community through the Theology
classes. Forty hours of service is required of each student to
introduce her to volunteerism, but many students perform many more
hours of service. Service within the community includes such projects
as tutoring at St. Benedict School, a Halloween carnival
for local elementary schools, feeding the hungry at Freedom House,
delivering Meals on Wheels, and educating children at museums.
Other projects done through churches, hospitals and nursing homes
are also accepted.
Tower (Yearbook)
Tower is a club for students who want to support
the production of the school yearbook, which is mainly created
by students taking the Publications course. As a member of this
club, each student helps to record events for posterity as she
learns rudiments of layout, graphics and photography.
Youth & Government
This club, sponsored by the Virginia YMCA, offers
students the opportunity to learn how their state government works
from an inside perspective. Students write bills to be debated
in the student operated Model General Assembly. This learning experience
also enhances the student’s sense of civic responsibility
and provides an opportunity to interact with students from throughout
the state of Virginia. The Model Judiciary Program, which is a
joint effort of the Virginia YMCA and the Young Lawyers Section
of the Virginia Bar Association, is also sponsored by Youth & Government.
This program is designed to give students from Virginia high schools
the opportunity to gain first-hand experience with the operation
of our judicial system. |
