The Varsity team was all smiles after the Gators upset St. Catherine’s on Tuesday, January 23
The Varsity basketball team had an big win against a top 10 team on Tuesday, January 23 as they took down St. Catherine’s, 53-40. The JV team also had a great game with the Daisies but couldn’t get the W. The snowed out games with Trinity will be played today, Friday, January 26 at SGHS at 4:30/6PM. Next week is a big week for the Gators: JV hosts Bishop Sullivan on Monday, January 29, both teams travel to Saint Anne’s Belfield on Wednesday, January 31 and the week is rounded out with Friday, Feb 2 vs St. Margaret’s and Saturday, Feb 3 vs. Norfolk Academy. Friday’s 5:30 Varsity game will be a Senior Recognition Game- please plan to attend!
The Gators swam well at the Trinity RVA Classic meet on Friday, January 19. Saint Gertrude was led by Mary Cornett, who finished 2nd in the both the 200 IM and 100 Breaststroke. Other Top 10 finishes include: 200 Medley Relay, 7th place (Butt, Cornett, Czaja, Lewis) 9th (J.Shelton, Smith, Alphen and S. Shelton); 200 Free 10th place (Butt), 200 IM, 9th (Lewis), 10th (Czaja); 50 Free, 10th (Czaja); 100 Butterfly, 10th (Butt); 200 Free Relay, 7th (Cornett, Butt, Lamb, Lewis), 8th (Sisk, J. Shelton, S. Shelton, Czaja). The Swim Team next competes in the LIS Tournament at St. Catherine’s on Saturday, Feb 3. The Seniors will honored at this meet- please plan to attend!
Indoor track & field had a break this week of competitions but is gearing up to head to Fork Union for a meet this Saturday, January 27. The team will also travel on Monday, January 29 to the Boo Williams Sportsplex to make up a previously snowed out meet.
The swim team had a strong showing at the State Catholic Meet on January 13. Top 10 finishes of the meet include: 9th in the 200 Medley Relay (Butt, Czaja, Lewis, Shelton), 4th in the 200 Free (Lewis), 6th in the 100 Free (Lewis), 6th in the 100 Back (Butt), and 7th in the 400 free relay (Lewis, Farrey, Butt and Czaja). The Gators finished the meet in 6th place overall. Today, the swimmers will compete at the Trinity Invitational.
The Varsity basketball team had a big win on Saturday, January 13 over The Potomac School, who was ranked 10th in the VISAA. Both teams played hard, but fell at LIS foe, Collegiate School on Tuesday, January 16. The home games with Trinity scheduled for Thursday, January 18 will be rescheduled shortly.

The Saint Gertrude Varsity Basketball team (6-2) upset 10th ranked private school in the state, The Potomac School, 64 to 56 on Saturday, January 13. This was time Saint Gertrude has beaten Potomac in 5 years.
Saint Gertrude: Aimee DeBell 15 pts, 8 rebounds, 5 for 6 free throws in fourth quarter to seal the win. Margot Powers 16 points, 4 3’s. Kelsie McLellan 6 reb 9pts, Nan Kerner 10 pts. Gill and Moore 6pts each
Potomac: Park 21pts, Caskin 26pts.

Potomac: 11 17 9 19 = 56
Congratulations to our December Gator of the Month, Kelsie McLellan ’18. Kelsie averaged 10 points, four rebounds and two steals per game during the month of December, while shooting 50% from the field. Kelsie helped lead her team to the 2nd Annual Gator Classic Championship, as well. Her three point shooting is always a crowd favorite. Way to Go, Kelsie!
The basketball teams have had a great week back after our snow days, with the varsity team winning back-to-back conference games over Covenant and Veritas on Tuesday and Wednesday. The JV green and JV white teams both won their games this week, as well. The varsity is currently on a four game winning streak. The JV white team will host Maggie Walker today, Friday, January 12 and the varsity team will host The Potomac School tomorrow, Saturday, January 13. Next week, the basketball teams will face LIS foes Collegiate and Trinity on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively.
The swim team meet at St. Catherine’s was canceled last week and the team will head to the State Catholic Meet tomorrow, January 13. Next week, the swimmers will compete at the Trinity Invitational on Friday, January 19.
Indoor track & field began practicing over Christmas break with new head coach, Ed Gotta. Members of the team traveled to Liberty University on Saturday, January 6 for the first meet of the season. The team’s meet hosted by Norfolk Academy was cancelled on Tuesday, January 9. The next meet for the girls will be Wednesday, January 17 at Dinwiddie HS.

The Saint Gertrude Varsity Basketball team holds off a strong second half from Steward School to win the 2nd Annual Gator Holiday Classic . The Gators defeated Bishop Sullivan in the first round of the tournament and then took on the team from Steward after they defeated a tough team from CVHAA. Three Gators were named to the All-Tournament Team- Seniors Aimee DeBell and Margot Powers and Freshman, Nan Kerner, who was also the Tournament MVP. The JV Basketball team defeated Maggie Walker on the first day of the tournament, as well. The JV White team hosted Williamsburg Christian on Wednesday, January 3rd and will host CVHAA on Friday at 4:30PM before the Varsity takes on CVHAA at 6PM. The JV and Varsity team travels to St. Margaret’s School on Thursday, January 4 for LIS action.
The Swim team traveled to Woodberry Forest on Dec 15 and had another strong showing. Top 5 finishes include: 2nd in the 200 medley relay (Clark, Cjaza, Lewis, Butt), 5th in the 200 Free (Farrey), 4th and 5th in the 200 IM (Lewis and Czaja), 2nd in the 50 Free (Clark), 5th in the 100 Butterfly (Luck), 2nd in the 100 Free (Clark) 3rd in the 200 Free Relay (Clark, Lewis, Butt and Czaja), 4th in the 100 Backstroke (Butt) and 5th in the 100 Breaststroke (Smith). The team will swim at St. Catherine’s on Saturday, January 6.
