SGHS Weekly Update


Five Gators swimmers have qualified for the VISAA meet this weekend, February 16-18th in Stafford, VA. Good luck to Mary Cornett, Lexi Lamb, Rachel Lewis, Emily Czaja and Cassidy Butt!

Indoor track & field will finish the season today, Friday February 16 at a JV Meet at Saint Christopher’s School. There will be an informational meeting for those girls interested in Outdoor Track & Field on Tuesday, February 20th at 4:30PM in the Athletic Lobby.

Saint Gertrude’s Athletic Department and the basketball teams hosted a Play4theCure game on Wednesday, February 14 to raise money for cancer research. An injury-ridden JV team dropped its final game of the season to Saint John Paul, but the Varsity team rebounded after losing on the road to the Wolves and won a hard fought game, 36-35 in the final seconds of the game! The JV teams this year finished with a combined record of 14-9! The Varsity basketball team finished the regular season with a record of 11-7 and tied for 3rd in the LIS Conference– the highest finish in recent years for the team! The Gators will travel to St. Catherine’s School today, Friday February 16th for a 5pm game for the 1st round of the LIS Tournament. A win will see them advance to the semi-final game on Tuesday, February 20. The Gators are currently ranked 10th in the State poll with the first round of the VISAA set to begin on Tuesday, February 27.

Spring Sports tryouts are set to begin, Tuesday February 20th following song contest practice. There is transportation to the Outdoor Athletic Center everyday for practice. This spring, Saint Gertrude will offer JV and Varsity Lacrosse, Golf, JV and Varsity Soccer, Varsity Softball and Outdoor Track & Field. The senior recognition game for basketball was held on Friday, February 2nd and was a great celebration of the four seniors on the team. We will be recognizing the eight seniors from our Indoor Track and Swim Teams with cake and kudos on Monday, February 12 at 3:45PM in the Athletic Lobby (outside of the gym).

 

Indoor track & field had a strong showing at the St. Christopher’s track meet on, Saturday, February 3. This Saturday, February 10th they will compete in the LIS Championships. Stop by and support the Gators at St. Christopher’s Indoor Track Facility. 1:50PM will be the 55M dash (Leah Bishop, Morgan Scofield, Fiona Hefele), 3:00PM will be the 1600M (Estelle Journet), 3:20 will be 4x200M (Bishop, Claire Rankin, Madeline Tuckley and Ashley Gonzalez), 3:30PM will be the 500M (Ashley Gonzalez and Emma Wilson), 3:50PM will be 1000M (Grace Davis) and 4:10PM will be the 300M (Tuckley, Hefele, Scofield).

 

The varsity basketball team is currently ranked 10th in the VISAA, following wins over St. Margaret’s School and Norfolk Academy last week. Wednesday, February 7th the Varsity team won a close game with top ranked Trinity, 49-54. The JV White team played Collegiate School on Thursday, February 8th and both JV and Varsity will travel to Saint John Paul the Great today, Friday, February 9. JV White continued to roll with a home win over Collegiate on Thursday, February 8.

 

The Gators swimmers competed in the LIS Tournament at St. Catherine’s on, Saturday, Feb 3 and placed 5th overall. Top 10 finishes from the meet included: Mary Cornett, 2nd place in the 100 Yard Butterfly; 5th place finishes from the relay team in the 200 yard medley relay (Butt, Cornett, Lewis and Czaja) and 400 yard free relay (Lewis, Czaja, Butt and Cornett); 6th place finish in the 200 free relay (Lamb, J. Shelton, Hess, S. Shelton); Cassidy Butt, 7th place in the 100 backstroke and Rachel Lewis, 9th place in the 500 Free. Five swimmers have qualified for the VISAA meet next week, February 16-18th- Mary Cornett, Lexi Lamb, Rachel Lewis, Emily Czaja and Cassidy Butt.

Indoor track & field had a great meet at the Boo Williams Invitational on Monday, January 26. St. Gertrude had FOUR top 10 finishes including a 2nd place by Madeline Tuckley! In the 300M Dash: Madeline – 2nd place, Leah – 8th place. In the 1000M Run: Grace – 6th Place, Estelle – 7th Place. The team will next race at St. Christopher’s track tomorrow, Saturday, February 3.

 

The basketball teams have had a tough few games, facing highly ranked Trinity and Saint Anne’s Belfield and falling to both squads.  Today, Feb 2 vs St. Margaret’s will be a Senior Recognition game and Saturday, Feb 3 is another home game vs. Norfolk Academy.

 

The Gators swimmers will competes in the LIS Tournament at St. Catherine’s on tomorrow, Saturday, Feb 3. The Seniors will honored at this meet.
