SGHS Weekly Update


Winter Sports Senior Recognitions are coming up! Basketball will be before the Tuesday, 1/29 game vs Collegiate School at 5:45 p.m. The Swim Team’s seniors will be recognized before the LIS Conference Meet on Saturday, February 2nd at 9:30 a.m. Our senior track athlete, Fiona Hefele, will be recognized at the end of the Spring Track season.

The JV and Varsity Basketball teams hosted St. Catherine’s School on Tuesday, January 22nd and although JV lost a close game, the Varsity game defeated the visitors for the second time this season. The Gators are currently ranked #11 in the VISAA polls! Today, Friday January 25, the Varsity team will travel to Huguenot High School to play Great Bridge Christian Academy in non-conference action. Both teams will host Collegiate school next Tuesday, January 28, with the Varsity having a senior recognition ceremony for Eve Maddock and Sha’Lelia Moore!

The Swim team is gearing up for the LIS Conference meet at St. Catherine’s Pool on Saturday, February 2. The seniors will be recognized prior to the meet at 9:30 a.m. There were a number of top 10 finishes in the RVA Classic meet on Saturday, January 19. Audrey Lewis earned her 500 free state cut and Rachel Lewis earned her 100 backstroke state cut.

The Indoor Track traveled to Boo Williams Sportsplex for a meet hosted by Norfolk Academy on Wednesday, January 23 and had a great performance! Leah Bishop posted two personal records in the 55M dash and the 300M dash. Leah finished 2nd in the 300M dash and set a new SGHS record! Rebecca Peppers also finished 7th in the 300M dash and Claire Rankin posted a 9th place finish and PR in the long jump. Madison Kuriger earned a PR in the Shot Put.

SGHS Weekly Athletic Update


The Gator Alumnae Presentation with Beth O’Connor Baker, SGHS and UVA Hall of Fame Swimmer was held on January 17. Students heard from a former Gator what it’s like to compete at the collegiate level, words of wisdom and advice on life after Saint Gertrude. “Take the bull by the horns with your goals. You gotta go for it!”

The JV and Varsity Basketball teams hosted Saint Anne’s Belfield on Tuesday, January 15. The JV came away with a convincing win and the Varsity fell short against the top ranked opponent. The teams traveled to Trinity Episcopal on Thursday evening where JV came away with their second big win in a row, 52-21!

The Varsity team played unbelievable defense against a hot shooting team and fought back hard in the second half but ultimately came up short against the Titans, 54-71. The teams host Episcopal High School tomorrow, Saturday, January 19. Please note that the Senior Recognition Game for Basketball will be on Tuesday, January 29th!Emily Czaja and Cassidy Butt traveled to Northern VA to represent the Swim Team for the State Catholic Meet on Saturday, 1/12. Both had strong showings, with Emily making her State cuts in two events. The team will all be together to compete at St. Catherine’s School in the RVA Classic on Saturday, January 19.

The Indoor Track team will next compete at the Boo Williams Sportsplex for a meet on Wednesday, January 23.

Weekly Athletics Update


Students celebrated our winter sports teams today, Friday, January 11th with a Pep Rally during Mod 8! Following school, the JV basketball team will have a home game at 4PM and the Varsity Basketball team will play a double header with Benedictine vs St. John Paul the Great at the Benedictine Gym! The varsity girls’ game has a 5:30 p.m. tip off, followed by the varsity boys’ game at 7:00 p.m. Potential students are invited to both games for the Gator Hoo-La Event!

Congratulations to December Gator of the Month, Nan Kerner. Nan is also currently one of the top scorers in the Richmond area–averaging 12 points a game!

The JV and Varsity Basketball teams both had a great showing in the 3rd Annual Gator Christmas Classic on December 27th & 28th. The JV team won both of their games and the Varsity team lost a great game in overtime to CVHAA to finish 2nd in the tournament. Caroline Gill and Nan Kerner were earned spots on the All-Tournament team and Nan was named the Tournament MVP! Both teams traveled to Collegiate yesterday, Thursday, January 3, but could not come away with wins. The teams are back in action next week, including a doubleheader event with BCP on Friday, January 11.

The Swim team rocked it at St. Catherine’s last Saturday, January 5. Willow Clark and Mary Cornett were the 1-2 punch finishing 1st and 2nd respectively in the 50 yard freestyle and 2nd and 3rd in the 100 yard backstroke!

The swimmers will travel to the Freedom Center for the State Catholic Meet tomorrow, Saturday, January 12.

The Indoor Track team is back and training hard to get back into meets in the next few weeks, with the next meets being at St. Christopher’s School on Friday and Saturday, 1/25 and 1/26.
