SGHS Weekly Athletic Update


Ali Pristas ‘ 20 comes out to make a save against Veritas School.

The varsity soccer team has put together a solid string of games over this past week, with a tie 1-1 vs Fredericksburg Christian last Friday, March 29, a 2-0 win over James River Eagles on Tuesday, April 2 and a 1-1 tie vs. Veritas School yesterday, April 4. The team will travel to Virginia Episcopal School tomorrow, Saturday, April 6.

The lacrosse teams had competitive games with state ranked, Saint Anne’s Belfield last Friday, March 29, but came up just short of the win. A rainout forced a reschedule for the JV game vs. Nansemond Suffolk, but the varsity game was able to be played on Wednesday, April 3. The Gators have been generating a lot of offense in recent games, and the defense has steadily improved and is really clicking. Rachel Hudgins ‘20 was awarded the Player of the Game by Coach Royster and Coach Schmidt! The varsity will next travel to VES tomorrow, Saturday April 6. The JV team hosts St. Catherine’s School today, Friday April 5 at 4:30 p.m.

The varsity softball team had a tough week with three games against challenging teams. The Gators fell to reigning LIS Champs, St. Margaret’s School on Monday, April 1 but bounced back to a victory on Tuesday, April 2 vs. Saint Anne’s-Belfield to sweep the series with the Saints, 8-4. Highlights included another strong pitching performance from Leah Robinson ‘22, who also recorded a double and Natalie Olenic ‘20 who also hit a double. Each team member contributed on offense and defense for the win. To finish a tough week of 3 games in 4 days, the Gators fell to the Titans of TES on Thursday, April 4 but are looking forward to some rest and recovery before next week.

The throwers from outdoor track & field competed on Saturday, March 30 at Manchester High School. Madison Kuriger ‘22  and Julia Barrafato ‘22 both had great showing in the shot put. Tomorrow, Saturday, April 6, the Gators will travel with coach Eric Goode and the Cadets to a meet at Woodberry Forest.

Isabella Riley ‘20 continues to lead the the golf team and recorded her first birdie in match play on Wednesday, April 3 at Sycamore Creek. Next week, the team will have two matches on Tuesday, April 9 and and Thursday, April 11.
