SGHS Weekly Athletics Update

Sophomore, Emily Czaja participated in an event at the Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club where she met and swam with Olympic Athletes, Simone Manuel and Martiza McClendon. Emily is pictured with Manuel, McClendon, a swimmer from Collegiate School and some swimmers from the Boys & Girls Club.

The Winter/Spring Athletic Banquet will be on May 16th. SGHS Athletic Trainer, Sadie Smith and VCU Sports Medicine will conduct Athletic Physicals at Saint Gertrude on August 2nd 3pm-6pm. Fall Sports Tryouts will begin on August 5th.

The varsity soccer team had a big win over the weekend at Virginia Episcopal School, 2-0. On Tuesday, April 9, the team dropped a close 1-2 game to Goochland High School. The Gators next faced Trinity Episcopal on Thursday, April 11 who at the time was ranked 3rd in the state polls. The Gators held the Titans to just three goals but could not find the net in a 0-3 loss. Today, Friday, April 12, soccer will host St. Margaret’s School.  

The lacrosse teams started the week with games at Collegiate School on Monday, April 8th with only a portion of the varsity game being played before weather forced the officials to call the games. The teams next traveled to Saint John Paul the Great on Wednesday but came up just short of the victory. The varsity team hosts St. Catherine’s School today, Friday, April 12.

The varsity softball team dropped a game to Collegiate School on Tuesday, April 9. On Thursday, April 11, the squad traveled to play CVHAA’s softball team. Today, Friday, April 12 the Gators host St. Margaret’s School.                                            

The outdoor track & field competed on Saturday, April 6 at Woodberry Forest and had some solid results! Top ten finishes included Mary Kehoe taking 2nd in the 1600 and 4th in the 800 as well as Sha”Lelia Moore taking 9th in the 400!  The Gators next traveled to JR Tucker for a meet on Thursday, April 11. There were a number of runners and throwers with positive improvements, highlighted by:

Mary Kehoe- 1st place in both the 800 meter run and 3200 meter run, Leah Bishop- 3rd place in the 100 meter dash, Sha’Lelia Moore- 3rd place in the 400 meter dash, and 9th and 13th place finishes and major distance improvements in the shot put from Madison Kuriger and Julia Barrafato, respectively.

The golf team traveled to Salisbury Country Club on Thursday, April 11. Next week, the team will just participate in one meet and the schedule will be updated as soon as that has been determined.

Middies Lacrosse had a great team win over Walker Grant Middle School. Middies Softball had a great win over visiting St. Catherine’s School on Thursday, April 11. Both teams will have home games following their varsity counterparts today, Friday, April 12 at 6:00 p.m. with softball taking on St. Margaret’s and Lacrosse taking on St. Catherine’s.
