The Gator softball team fielded a varsity level squad this season and immediately proved to be full of potential for years to come. Freshman Leah Robinson was a force on the mound for the Gators, recording over 100 strikeouts for the team. Offensively she led the team in several categories including home runs and batting average. She even hit a grand slam! Leah was named to the All-Conference team this year, which is a first in the past four years for Saint Gertrude.
JV and Varsity lacrosse showed tremendous improvement over the year with both teams getting victories on the field. The JV team was led by first year player, Nan Kerner and sophomore Charlotte Clarke. The Varsity team, led by senior Meagan Marks and Junior Autumn Kash had a high powered offense and stifling defense. Autumn Kash set a new school record for points in a single season and was named to the All-LIS Conference team for the second time in two years. The Varsity team was also awarded the Sportsmanship Award in the LIS Conference.
The outdoor track & field team set a number of school records this spring! Mary Kehoe set new school records in the 800m, 1600m, 3200m and as part of the 4×400 relay team with Leah Bishop, Sha’ Lelia Moore, and Ida Adeso. In the State Meet, Mary Kehoe led the Gators, finishing 5th in the 1600M and 11th in the 800M. The 4x400M relay team of Ida Adeso, Leah Bishop, Sha’Lelia Moore and Mary Kehoe finished 8th and the 4x100M and the team of Ida Adeso, Ashley Gonzalez, Fiona Hefele and Leah Bishop finished 10th
The golf team was led by junior, Isabella Riley who continued to shine for the Gators, even recording birdies in match play this year. Her teammates, Sydney Bernard, Taylor Carn, Meredith Kreck and Gabi Unger all showed improvement on the course and the greens this year.

Swimming dove right in this past winter and achieved some state qualifying times at the very first meet of the season. The following athletes qualified for the state meet: Cassidy Butt, Willow Clark, Mary Cornett, Emily Czaja, Audrey Lewis, Rachel Lewis, and Vivian Upchurch. The team finished 9th in the VISAA state meet. Top 10 finishes in the state included, Penn State Bound, Mary Cornett placing 3rd in the 200 IM and 4th in the 100M Breast stroke. Willow Clark placed 7th in the 50M Free and 8th in the 100M Back. The 4 x100 free relay team of Cassidy Butt, Audrey Lewis, Willow Clark and Mary Cornett placed 8th and that same relay team placed 9th in the 4 x 50 Medley relay. In addition to the awesome performances from the seniors, this year’s underclassmen showed that the future is bright for SGHS swimming!
The Indoor track team broke the school record for the 4 x 200 relay at their very first meet. The relay team was made up of Leah Bishop, Madeline Tuckley, Claire Rankin, and Fiona Hefele. The new school record now stands at 2:07:80 Freshman, Madison Kuriger finished the season by setting a new school record for the Indoor Shot Put at the VISAA State Meet.

Field hockey saw some of the most exciting games in program history highlighted by a quadruple overtime win verses the Virginia Episcopal School! Junior goalie Emma Fox racked up record setting saves in that game and added to her already impressive resume in the goal, including 240 saves this season!
The cross country team worked hard all season with the biggest highlights coming from Sophomore runner, Mary Kehoe. Mary finished second place in the LIS meet and third place in the VISAA State meet. Mary also broke the school record for the 5K on two different occasions this season and took first in the State Catholic Meet.
The varsity tennis team was led by Senior Caitlin Crowder, who played at the #1 spot for the Gators. Caitlin earned wins this season over St. Catherine’s, STAB and Veritas School. Caitlin and Freshman Lauren Greis both finished 5th at the LIS tournament as well as the doubles team of Lauren and Margaret Allocca.
Fall Sports Tryouts
Fall sports tryouts begin August 5. Students must have a completed VISAA physical turned in before tryouts. Individual sports tryout schedules will vary. Please reach out to Fran Pochily, Director of Athletics or the individual coach for more information and questions.
SGHS Athletic Trainer, Sadie Smith and VCU Sports Medicine will conduct Athletic Physicals at Saint Gertrude on August 2nd 3 p.m. – 5 p.m.
Field Hockey will be coached by Madlene Brannau, and we will have a junior varsity and varsity team. Tryouts will be at the Saint Gertrude Outdoor Athletic Center (OAC) 490 Scott Road, Richmond, 23227. Saint Gertrude hosts a summer field hockey league at the OAC on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with games at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. beginning June 18. There is also a workout packet for any interested players to help them prepare for the upcoming season. The packet has sprint work, strength training, agility work, stick skills, and injury prevention. Please contact Madlene Brannau for this information and any additional information.
Tennis will be coached by Rich Razzetti, and there is the possibility of both a junior varsity and varsity team this year, based on the number of those girls interested. Tryouts will be held at the Saint Gertrude Outdoor Athletic Center (OAC) 490 Scott Road, Richmond, 23227.
Volleyball will be coached by Andre Spencer, and we will have a junior varsity and varsity team this year. Tryouts begin Monday, August 5 at the Sister Charlotte Lange Gymnasium at SGHS. There will be Open Gym for Volleyball this summer at SGHS on Wednesdays from 6-7:15p.m., and the team will also play in a summer league at Steward School. Students are highly encouraged to attend as many open gyms and camps as possible, especially for incoming 9th graders.
Cross Country will be coached by Kevin Coley at firstname.lastname@example.org who will jointly coach the Gators and the Cadets at Benedictine. The team will practice at Benedictine College Prep or other area courses. The season runs from August through the middle part of November and involves some Saturday practices and meets.
SGHS will also participate in the basketball summer league at Trinity Episcopal School and other winter and spring sports may be conducting summer workouts as well, so please contact Fran Pochily, SGHS Athletic Director, with questions or interest in these sports!
