SGHS Weekly Athletics Update


Winter Sports are just around the corner. Please be sure students have an up to date athletic physical uploaded into Magnus prior to tryouts. Basketball tryouts begin on November 4. Swimming practices start on November 11 and Indoor Track practices begin on November 18. 

The volleyball teams had two competitive matches this week, starting with St. Margaret’s on Tuesday, October 22 for the senior recognition games. The JV played a great match and the varsity got a big win, 3-1 over the Scotties. On Thursday, October 24 the JV concluded their season with a match vs Veritas. The Varsity team battled to the tiebreaker 5th set but fell just short of the win. The Varsity team earned the 6th seed in the LIS tournament and will travel to #3 seeded St. Margaret’s on Tuesday, October 29. 

The Tennis teams concluded their regular seasons this week. JV finished up the year with a loss at Collegiate School and the Varsity team took on Trinity on Thursday, October 24 for their Senior Recognition Match. It was a beautiful day for tennis and the squad played their best. Senior captain, Kara Gallagher had a great day winning both her single’s match and her double’s match with partner, Anne Stewart Hatfield. The LIS Tournament begins Tuesday, October 29 and will conclude on Thursday, October 31 at Collegiate School’s Courts. 

Congratulations to the Cross Country team for a great showing at the State Catholic Meet on Wednesday, October 23. Junior Captain, Mary Kehoe finished 2nd overall by less than one second. Brynn Vea, Christa Tuohy and Dabney Lang all had great showings, as well. The team will compete on Friday, November 1 at the LIS Conference Meet at Panorama Farms.

Field hockey finished out a great regular season with games this week against Trinity and Saint John Paul the Great.  The team earned the #5 seed in the LIS Conference Tournament and will travel to Saint Anne’s Belfield on Monday, October 28 for a 3:30 p.m. quarterfinal game.

SGHS Weekly Athletics Update


The volleyball senior recognition match is Tuesday, October 22 and the senior recognition match for tennis is Thursday, October 24!

Thursday, October 17 was a fun, volleyball-filled day! During Mod 8, students, faculty and staff packed the gym to watch the Faculty vs Students game! While the old timers came out victorious, everyone had a blast! The JV volleyball team next played a great match vs Trinity  before the Varsity team came out strong to defeat the Titans in three sets. The JV team also had a great win over Veritas Prep on Tuesday, October 15. Both teams will conclude the regular season next week with home games vs St. Margaret’s on Tuesday, October 22 (Senior Recognition Match!) and Veritas on Thursday, October 24. 

The Tennis teams continue to play well this season and are ready to peak as they head into the conference tournament. The match rained out on Wednesday with Collegiate was played on Thursday, October 17 for Varsity only. The JV team traveled to St. Margaret’s School and came home with a team victory! The JV team will finish its season next week with back to back matches vs Collegiate and Trinity. The Varsity team will take on Trinity on Thursday, October 24 for their Senior Recognition Match.

Field hockey has been having an awesome season and this week continued to show that. On Tuesday, October 15 the Varsity team defeated Walsingham Academy, 4-0…a great way to honor the seniors! The JV team tied a tough Panthers team 2-2 the following day. Next week, the team will host Trinity on Tuesday, October 22 and travel to Saint John Paul on Thursday, October 24 to finish out the regular season.  Qualifying members of the cross country team will compete tomorrow, Saturday, October 19 at the MileStat.com Invitational!

SGHS Weekly Athletics Update


The Field Hockey senior recognition game is Tuesday, October 15.

Field hockey keep their winning streak alive with another solid victory on Tuesday, October 7 over Nansemond Suffolk. The team next played host to Walsingham Academy on Thursday, October 10 and EC Glass on Saturday, October 12 and got two more wins to bring them to 7-6 on the season. JV and varsity volleyball dropped games at  top ranked, St. Catherine’s on Monday, October 7. Both teams hosted Saint Anne’s-Belfield on Thursday, October 10 with the Varsity team earning a convincing 3-0 win. Saturday, the varsity team will hosted the Gator Classic Tournament and took second in the tournament to Guardian Christian Academy. The cross country team traveled down to Mt. Trashmore in Virginia Beach for a meet hosted by Norfolk Collegiate, on Friday, October 4 and Mary Kehoe ‘21 finished 3rd! The team was off of competition this week but will be back to it next weekend at the MileStat.com Invitational.The tennis matches scheduled on Tuesday, October 8 were canceled due to wet court conditions. The JV team hosted St. Bridget’s in a friendly scrimmage on Wednesday. September 9. The varsity team will host Veritas this afternoon, Friday, October 11. Good luck Gators!

The Field Hockey team after an exciting win over Hampton Roads Academy on Thursday.

The Sunset at the OAC is TOMORROW! Purchase your tickets tonight if you haven’t already done so! The cost increases to $65 for walk up tickets on Saturday. 

Last Saturday, September 28 was a great day for Gator Athletics! The JV Volleyball team tasted victory, playing well in the Atlee JV Tournament and both Varsity Field Hockey and Varsity Volleyball traveled out to Virginia Episcopal School and brought home wins for Saint Gertrude! Mary Kehoe placed 1st in the Patrick Henry Cross Country meet and teammates Brynn Vea and Dabney Lang both earned PRs on the day! 

Field hockey had a solid week, with a JV win over Collegiate 3-1 on Tuesday, October 1 and a Varsity win over Hampton Roads Academy on Thursday, October 3. The JV and Middies Volleyball team enjoyed a double headed on Monday vs CVHAA. Then, JV and Varsity Volleyball hosted Saint John Paul the Great on Wednesday, October 2. The Varsity team came away with a convincing 3-0 win. Both teams will travel to Collegiate School for matches today, Friday, October 4 at 4:30/5:45 p.m. The Varsity tennis match vs Veritas on Wednesday was rescheduled for Friday, October 11 due to unsafe temperatures. Both teams faced Collegiate on Tuesday, October 1. Although the teams could not record an upset, the Varsity #2 Doubles team of Kara Gallagher and Anne Steward Hatfield came from being down 4-6 to win their match, 9-7! The cross country team travels down to Mt. Trashmore in Virginia Beach for a meet hosted by Norfolk Collegiate today, Friday, October 4. Good luck Gators!
