SGHS Athletics Update

Congratulations to Sophomore, Kate Samson for earning 2nd Team All-State Honors in Basketball! Way to go, Kate!

Dear Gators and Gator Parents,

Sending you all a big virtual Gator Chomp! This week, I have participated in a few video meetings with our state and conference athletic directors and I wanted to let you know what I have learned and what we know right now regarding the spring season:

This week, the VISAA (our state sports organization) will be meeting to discuss plans for state tournaments and competitions. Our LIS organization has opted to wait until this state meeting to make any determination as it pertains to our specific conference. I will be checking in next week with the updates I have and any conclusions that are made.

While the extended closure of SGHS would only leave a few weeks of the spring athletic season, my view is that if we are safely able to engage in competitions/practices, any day we can have sports in our girls lives and time where they can be together with their team and coaches is better than a day without. Our league has even discussed the idea of a “Spring Jamboree” if possible where all the teams could gather and play some games together.

Parents: I’ve been receiving a lot of communications from different organizations on how to help our athletes through this challenging time. I wanted to share a great article specific to how you can help your daughter keep the love of sports alive in your homes!

For those girls who are pursuing college athletics, here is a great article with the updated recruiting guidelines:  New NCAA recruiting rules

I will also be sharing other options for the girls via social media. Please check out our @SGHSGators Instagram or Twitter for messages from our coaches and other topics/ideas. Please feel free to email me anytime if you have specific questions or need ideas!

Finally, here is an excerpt of a recent email I sent to our coaches that I wanted to share with you all:

“I’m sure you all have thought about those college seniors who have lost their postseasons or final seasons of their sports. This is a possibility for our girls, as well. A college baseball player tweeted this recently and I thought it was awesome: “As an NCAA senior, today showed me some things are bigger than baseball. If we get the chance to play, we will be ready.  If not, I can assure you most of us will do exactly what sports has trained us to do when we are punched in the mouth, and that’s get back up and keep moving.”

Sports has made us the strong people that we all are and sports will help us through this. I’m here for you if you need me or just feel like venting. Hoping to see you all soon and praying for you all.”

Go Gators!
