Class of 2021 Graduation Ceremony

Brenda Bullock Brickley ’69
Commencement Speaker

Brenda Bullock Brickley ’69 began her career in education after gaining a baccalaureate degree in mathematics from Longwood College. She subsequently completed graduate studies with a masters degree in counselor education and secondary guidance from Virginia Commonwealth University. In addition to teaching at Saint Gertrude, Mrs. Brickley worked for eight years with Henrico County Public Schools and for eight years as a vice president at Security Federal Savings and Loan. During all of this time, she tutored countless students in the Richmond area.

Mrs. Brickley’s dedication to the educational and spiritual mission of the Benedictine Sisters of Virginia was ingrained in her from a young age. As a young girl, she grew to know and love the sisters through her attendance at Holy Angels Nursery School operated by the Camboni Sisters and St. Paul’s School run by the Benedictine Sisters of Virginia. In addition, her mother was an accomplished church musician at many local parishes. Mrs. Brickley continued her mother’s legacy by accompanying countless SGHS choir performances, chapel services, and Masses beginning when she was a student and continuing throughout her career as a teacher.

During her 26 years as a faculty member at Saint Gertrude, Mrs. Brickley has held a multitude of positions including department chair, head moderator, moderator of SCA, co-chair of school accreditation, and assistant principal. During her continued professional growth, she served the Virginia Association of Independent Schools (VAIS) by assisting in the coordination of annual conferences and serving as a member of visiting teams for other Virginia independent schools seeking accreditation. Additionally, her colleagues awarded her the Faculty Ingenuity Award in 2018 for the initiation of the Math Peer Tutoring Program. Mrs. Brickley will retire from teaching at Saint Gertrude at the conclusion of the 2020-21 school year.
