SGHS Health and Wellness

During the four years at Saint Gertrude High School, all students must complete:
 
2 semesters of Health (Health 1 and Health 2)
7 units of Personal Fitness
 
A unit of Personal Fitness may be earned in any of the following ways:
 
Saint Gertrude High School team sport: 1 season = 1 unit
Health 1 Class = 1 unit
Participation in a Saint Gertrude High School Drama production: 1 production = 1 unit (max of 4 units)
 
After school or weekend physical activity (requires Athletic Contract with prior approval and time/activity log): Each contract = 1 unit  
 
If it is not school sponsored, it must be pre-approved by the Health and Wellness teacher. It is the student’s responsibility to have the activity verified in writing by an adult sponsor.
 
Recommended:  2 units of Personal Fitness freshman year, 2 units of Personal Fitness sophomore year, 2 units of Personal Fitness junior year, and 1 unit of Personal Fitness senior year.
  • Aerobic Conditioning

    Students will train for the Saint Gertrude 5K and Momument Avenue 10K race.  This class will follow a prescribed training program and will include both corss training and alternative training.  This class will either be scheduled during the regular day for one quarter or for one semester during the Zero Period (7:00am) twice a week.
  • Athletic Trainer

    This elective course is designed as an introduction into athletic training and the six domains of the profession: prevention, evaluation and diagnosis, immediate care, treatment and rehabilitation, organization and administration, and professional responsibility. Students will explore the basic anatomy of the body, including bones, muscles, and ligaments, and correlate this knowledge with common injuries and illnesses seen in a physically active population.  Lessons will focus on one body area at a time and cover the causes, signs and symptoms, and treatment of common injuries and illnesses associated with that area. During the class, the students will become proficient in basic taping and wrapping as well as crutch fitting.  Opportunities are available for the students to assist Saint Gertrude’s athletic trainer after school with daily tasks in the athletic training room as well as at sport practices for service hours. Open to juniors and seniors only; basic first aid and CPR certification are pre-requisites for this class.
  • Fitness for Life

    This nine-week course will include basic background information on physical fitness as well as hands on experience. This course will include strength training as well as cardio-respiratory workouts. A variety of techniques including running, aerobics, Tae-Bo, fitness room workouts, and circuit training will be used. The girls will set individual fitness goals and will be monitored for progress.
  • Health 1

    This nine-week health course is required during the freshman year. This health course consists of units in health and wellness, stress management (including suicide), and nutrition. This course will offer the students an opportunity to apply personal standards to implement a plan that promotes healthy habits and wellness.
  • Health 2

    This nine-week health course is required before graduation. This health course consists of units in human sexuality, lifestyle diseases, and drugs. This course will allow the students the opportunity to learn about female and male anatomy and also how to develop healthy relationships with others. This course also includes the diseases that can result from unhealthy lifestyles. The effects of drug use and abuse are included in this course, as well as what are other alternatives to drug use. The students will be able to choose healthy alternatives and incorporate them into their lifestyle.
  • Health 3

    This nine-week health course may be taken at any time while at Saint Gertrude High School. This course includes First Aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) training. The course will follow the American Red Cross guidelines. Each student that successfully completes the course (80 per cent or higher) will be certified in the completed areas of first aid training, adult, child, and infant CPR, and adult and child AED. The purpose of this class is to train each student in emergency situations. The student will be able to provide the care necessary to sustain life until professional medical personnel arrive.
  • Sports Skills

    These courses will place a strong emphasis on personal fitness while focusing on different skills each quarter. These sports will include: Softball and Soccer; Basketball and Cross Country; Lacrosse and Volleyball; Field Hockey and TennisIn addition to learning skills specific to each sport, strength training, as well as cardio respiratory workouts will be included. Good sportsmanship, fair play, and teamwork are expected at all times during these classes. They promote the values of our school as well as safety during the classes.
  • Weight Training

    Open to students of all fitness backgrounds, this nine-week course is designed to meet each student’s specific goals of a fitness program.  The basics of weight training will be presented including the muscle groups targeted with certain exercises and how to increase muscle tone or muscle strength.  Students will be taught proper lifting techniques as well as introduced to methods of increasing core stability.  Each class will begin with a dynamic warm-up followed by the student’s individualized weight training fitness program and finish up with a cool-down stretch.  Come ready to learn and participate in some new ways to increase your overall physical fitness!  (The students will be given sport or fitness credit for successful completion of the course with a grade of “B” or higher.)
  • Yoga

    Open to students of all ability levels, this course will guide students through a therapeutic sequence of postures. Students will practice a stationary-sequence style of yoga, as well as a vinyasa flow. Students will build a solid foundation of yoga principles and yoga poses. This course will guide students through meditation and meditation techniques. The goal of this course is to not only challenge the student's physical potential, but also to help them develop stress management techniques while promoting a well-rounded sense of health and well-being.
