Song Contest

One of Our Oldest and Most Treasured TraditionsSong Contest

Held each year at the historic Altria Theater, Song Contest is a beloved musical tradition and the highlight of the Saint Gertrude school year. Over 3,000 community members come together to celebrate this unforgettable night of music, class spirit, and performance.

Each class, represented by their class colors, presents a set of familiar tunes with original lyrics, performing alongside the Saint Gertrude alma mater. A panel of three expert judges—including a Saint Gertrude alumna—selects first and second place based on music, lyrics, spirit, leadership, and participation.

In the weeks leading up to Song Contest, the halls burst with class colors, themed decorations, and nonstop rehearsals. More than a performance, Song Contest is where the leadership that defines a Saint Gertrude education flourishes, and where sisterhood creates memories that last a lifetime.
You can watch this year's 74th Annual Song Contest and earlier performances below.  We hope you will join us for the 75th annual Song Contest on February 27, 2026!

We spend a lot of time preparing for Song Contest, and you are able to connect with others on a much deeper level through this tradition. All of our hard work was worth it when I stepped out on the Altria stage, and it all felt like a dream. One thing I will never forget was all the SGHS alumni who showed up to watch Song Contest. After seeing that, I knew that after I graduate I would be back to support SGHS in the same way.
